Bratislava – Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico of Smer-SD, has reacted to comments made by Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Kallas cautioned EU leaders against traveling to Moscow for the May Victory Day celebrations, labeling such visits as inappropriate. Fico labeled her remarks as disrespectful and confirmed his intention to attend the Moscow event, asserting that Western nations are instigating protests reminiscent of the Maidan movements. This information was relayed to TASR by the press and information department of the Slovak Government Office.
“Ms. Kallas, I want to remind you that I am the legitimate Prime Minister of Slovakia—a sovereign nation. No one can dictate to me where I should or shouldn’t go. I will travel to Moscow to honor the many Red Army soldiers who sacrificed their lives to liberate Slovakia, as well as the millions of other victims of Nazi atrocities. Just as I have honored the sacrifices made during the Normandy landings and in the Pacific, I will also pay my respects to the RAF pilots,” Fico stated.
He questioned whether Kallas’s warning constituted blackmail or an indication that he would face repercussions upon his return. He emphasized the necessity for a debate within the EU concerning the true essence of democracy.
“We need to discuss the events in Romania and France regarding the presidential elections, the Maidan-like protests being organized by the West in Georgia and Serbia, and the neglect of criminal law abuses against the opposition in Slovakia,” he added.
Fico also highlighted that he is among the few in the EU advocating for peace in Ukraine, distancing himself from those who promote the continuation of conflict.
Kallas had previously warned EU leaders on April 14 against attending the May Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, noting that their participation would not be taken lightly given Russia’s ongoing military actions in Europe. This statement followed a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council held in Luxembourg on April 15.
“I will go to Moscow to pay my respects to the thousands of Red Army soldiers who died while liberating Slovakia. As well as to the millions of other victims of Nazi rampage. Just as I paid my respects to the victims of the landings in Normandy or in the Pacific, or how I will go to pay my respects to the RAF pilots.” Robert Fico
