Belgrade/Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) affirmed Slovakia’s commitment to Serbia’s territorial integrity during his visit to Belgrade on Thursday, following his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Fico emphasized Slovakia’s support for Serbia’s European Union accession talks and announced plans to reassign Slovak soldiers to NATO’s peacekeeping mission (KFOR), as reported by TASR’s special correspondent.
Fico expressed his desire to build a relationship between Slovakia and Serbia founded on mutual trust and support, stating, “We can rely on each other.”
In his remarks, Vučić referred to Fico as “one of the most important and significant world leaders,” noting that their discussions encompassed strategic matters, bilateral ties, and enhancing cooperation across economic and other sectors.
Fico remarked that his talks with Vučić highlighted the potential for political discussions centered on “independent sovereign policies grounded in international law and respect for a country’s internal affairs.” He noted it was unfortunate that such meetings are not more frequent and mentioned plans for both leaders to visit Moscow together in May next year.
The Slovak Prime Minister commended Serbia’s “excellent results” in economic development, questioning what certain Western countries would offer for similar progress.
He asserted that Slovakia fully honors Serbia’s EU accession negotiations and that the direction of Serbia’s path is ultimately its own decision. Fico offered insights from Slovakia’s European integration journey, while also acknowledging the “tragic mistakes” Slovakia made, particularly regarding its energy security. He humorously suggested that Slovakia would gladly share these lessons if Serbia wished to learn from them.
The two leaders also touched on the Slovak community in Serbia, with Fico noting that these individuals cherish Serbia as their home while also aiming to preserve their cultural heritage.
During his visit to Belgrade, Fico inaugurated a business forum that was attended by numerous Slovak entrepreneurs. The Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO) also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce during the event. (November 21)
