Fico: Slovakia is not supplying gas to Ukraine; Russian gas is being delivered there via European suppliers.

Bratislava – Slovakia is not supplying gas to Ukraine, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) announced on Wednesday via social media. He pointed out that the issue may stem from foreign suppliers who acquire Russian gas in Europe and subsequently transport it to Ukraine through the reverse pipeline in Vojany, in accordance with European regulations. This amounts to approximately 7.5 million cubic meters (m³) per day, which he deems significant and has already raised concerns with the European Commission (EC).

“Slovakia does not send any of its gas to Ukraine. I would never consent to that, especially after President Zelensky unilaterally halted the transit of Russian gas from Ukraine to Slovakia and further into Europe,” Fico stated.

The Prime Minister also criticized the current situation where Russian gas flows from west to east, rather than the intended east to west, leading to shortages in Europe and skyrocketing gas prices.

“Currently, prices are around 60 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), and they are expected to rise further due to Ukraine’s empty gas reserves and high demand. If the European Union’s authorities continue to tolerate this inequity affecting EU member states and the resulting gas price increases—simply because of Ukraine—they should not be surprised if the credibility of EU institutions continues to wane,” Fico concluded. “Slovakia does not send any of its gas to Ukraine. I would never agree with that after President Zelensky showed us when he unilaterally stopped the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Slovakia and further to Europe.” Robert Fico

Oh, brilliant! Who knew that playing hot potato with gas supplies could be so complicated? I suppose we should just let the European suppliers continue their little charade while we all pretend this isn’t a game of musical chairs with gas prices, eh? 🤷‍♂️💨

Isn’t it delightful how Slovakia plays the ultimate game of “not my problem” while others juggle Russian gas like it’s a hot potato? 🤷‍♂️ Who knew being a Prime Minister meant mastering the art of pointing fingers and calling it diplomacy?
