Belgrade/Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated in an interview with Serbian state television RTS that Serbia is prepared for European Union membership; however, this process is hindered by the application of double standards against the country, as reported by TASR.
Fico emphasized the importance of making decisions that prioritize citizens’ interests, drawing from Slovakia’s own experiences to avoid the pitfalls encountered by other nations prior to joining the EU. He also proposed establishing a collaborative format akin to the Visegrad Group (V4) that would include Slovakia, Hungary, and Serbia.
The Prime Minister praised the communication with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, describing it as productive given their ideological alignment and commitment to a “sovereign policy.”
He commended Serbia’s political leadership for its efforts in safeguarding the EU’s borders. Fico expressed his desire to initiate discussions on Serbia’s EU accession and the formation of a V5 grouping when Slovakia assumes the presidency of the Visegrad Group next year.
Fico also indicated support for nuclear energy collaboration with Serbia, stating that Slovakia is willing to share its extensive experience in “building, modernizing, and decommissioning” nuclear power facilities.
During the interview, Fico reiterated his opposition to recognizing Kosovo’s independence, asserting, “someone cannot just come and declare independence.” He assured that Slovakia would fully support Serbia’s EU accession but refrained from predicting a potential timeline for membership due to the influence of certain “major players in the EU.”
The Slovak Prime Minister confirmed plans for Serbian television to accompany Vučić on a trip to Moscow in May 2025, invited by Russia to attend the Victory Day celebrations over Fascism.
“Someone cannot just come and declare independence,” Robert Fico commented on the issue of Kosovo.
