Călin Georgescu surprised many by securing a victory in the first round of Romania’s presidential election last November, largely due to a highly successful TikTok campaign.
However, the Constitutional Court later annulled the results, citing concerns over alleged Russian interference that may have influenced the vote.
Despite this, the Trump administration—whose foreign policy often aligns with the Kremlin—has supported allowing Georgescu to continue his candidacy.
Following the court’s decision, Trump’s senior adviser Elon Musk reacted on social media, posting on X: “This is crazy.”

In response to the ruling, Georgescu attempted to frame the situation as an international crisis, warning that any perceived erosion of Romanian democracy could have global consequences. “If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall!” he wrote on X. “This is just the beginning. Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!”
