Brussels – The European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) has endorsed the European Citizens’ Initiative My Voice, My Choice, advocating for safe and accessible abortion for all women within the EU. The resolution proposal urges the European Commission to create a voluntary mechanism to assist member states in guaranteeing safe abortion services.
The rapporteur from the liberal party, Abir Al-Sahlani, who drafted the resolution proposal, hailed the vote as a significant victory for supporters of the My Voice, My Choice movement, led by the Slovenian NGO Institute 8th of March.
“This demonstrates that our union can advocate for both women’s freedom of choice and respect for national legislation. This initiative illustrates what can be achieved when citizens and institutions collaborate for equality and democracy,” stated the Swedish MEP.
The Institute 8th of March celebrated the approval of the resolution proposal as an initial victory. The initiative’s coordinator and director of the institute, Nika Kovač, emphasized that it underscores the unifying nature of fundamental reproductive rights.
Preparations are already underway for the vote on the resolution proposal at the European Parliament’s plenary session, scheduled for the end of the month in Strasbourg.
The European Commission accepted the My Voice, My Choice initiative, which has garnered over 1.1 million signatures from EU citizens, for review on September 1 of this year. It has until early March 2026 to provide a response. (November 5)
