
Brussels (Eurotoday) – The European Council has approved a new composition of the European Commission, the second under President Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Council today on 28 Nov 2024 appointed by written procedure the new European Commission for the period from 1 December 2024 to 31 October 2029. According to a press release of the EU Council: “The President of the Commission will be Ursula VON DER LEYEN (Germany) and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will be Kaja KALLAS (Estonia), who will also be one of the Vice-Presidents of the Commission under Article 18(4) of the Treaty on European Union (TEU).”
As reported by the EU Council, the other members of the Commission will include Magnus Brunner from Austria, Hadja Lahbib from Belgium, and Ekaterina Spasova Gecheva-Zaharieva from Bulgaria. Additionally, Dubravka Šuica from Croatia, Constantinos Kadis from Cyprus, and Jozef Síkela from Czechia will also be part of the team.
Dan Jørgensen from Denmark, Henna Maria Virkkunen from Finland, and Stéphane Séjourné from France are among the selected members. Apostolos Tzitzikostas from Greece, Olivér Várhelyi from Hungary, and Michael McGrath from Ireland will also join as the Commissioner. Raffaele Fitto from Italy, Valdis Dombrovskis from Latvia, and Andrius Kubilius from Lithuania are also included.
Christophe Hansen from Luxembourg, Glenn Micallef from Malta, and Wopke Bastiaan Hoekstra from the Netherlands will be part of the Commission. Piotr Arkadiusz Serafin from Poland, Maria Luís Casanova Morgado Dias de Albuquerque from Portugal, and Roxana Mînzatu from Romania will also be part of the new Commission. Lastly, Maroš Šefčovič from Slovakia, Marta Kos from Slovenia, Teresa Ribera Rodríguez from Spain, and Jessika Roswall from Sweden round out the list of members.
A day earlier, the European Parliament ratified the new team of the European Commission, led by Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen, who will serve her second five-year term as president. MEPs voted 370 in favour, and 282 against, with 36 abstentions, approving the 27-member executive team.
