EU to Launch Automated Border Control in October

Brussels (Belgium) – A new system will compile a centralized file containing the names, passport numbers, fingerprints, and photos of all non-EU nationals traveling to Europe for short stays.

“This will enhance our ability to monitor who is entering and leaving the EU,” stated Magnus Brunner, the European Commissioner for Migration.

The rollout of this system, which has been under consideration for nearly a decade, will occur gradually.

Some transport companies express concern about the potential for increased wait times at airports and train stations due to the “entry/exit” system.

The European Commission has assured that communication campaigns will facilitate the system’s introduction and highlights its role in “preventing irregular migration and safeguarding the security of European citizens.”

Twenty-nine countries will take part in this automated control system, including all EU nations except Cyprus and Ireland, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. (July 30, 2025)
