BRUSSELS (ANP) – Following discussions in Saudi Arabia, the United States announced on Tuesday that agreements have been reached regarding shipping safety in the Black Sea. The talks also aimed at securing the release of Ukrainian prisoners. The European Union expressed its support for these discussions but emphasized the necessity of “political will” from Russia to bring an end to the conflict, as stated by a spokesperson.
The EU is not considering lifting sanctions, as it seeks to maintain pressure on Russia to cease hostilities. According to the EU spokesperson, these sanctions do not restrict trade in agricultural goods between Russia and third-party nations. The EU is committed to safeguarding global food security, noting that an end to the war would have the most significant and enduring positive effect on this issue.
The spokesperson further asserted that Russia should be evaluated “by its actions, not its words.” They pointed out that while Vladimir Putin claims to desire lasting peace, Russia continues to perpetrate death and destruction daily. “These attacks could have been averted if Russia genuinely wanted peace,” the spokesperson added.
The EU reiterated its readiness to engage in peace discussions “in collaboration with Ukraine, the United States, and other partners.”
