EU Parliamentarians Visit to Advocate for Imprisoned Swedish Journalist in Turkey

Ankara – Swedish journalist Joakim Medin has been detained in Turkey and faces charges, including insulting the president. His arrest occurred at Istanbul Airport as he arrived to cover large-scale protests taking place in the country at the end of March.

In advance of the trial scheduled for Wednesday, a notable delegation from Sweden has gathered in Ankara.

“Turkey must realize that failure to release Joakim Medin could lead to severe repercussions for its relations with both Sweden and the EU,” warns Jonas Sjöstedt, an MEP from the Left Party.

Sjöstedt is attending the trial alongside Ulrika Westerlund, a Green Party Member of Parliament.

“Our presence is significant; we believe it will influence the situation. This is a politically motivated prosecution; the charges are a reflection of Medin’s work as a journalist, not actual crimes,” Westerlund stated in an interview with TT outside the courthouse.

According to Jonas Sjöstedt, Medin’s case is beginning to attract attention “across multiple EU countries.”

“We have convened Swedish parliamentarians and will present a proposal for a vote next week. It is likely that the EU Parliament will denounce the arrest and call for Joakim Medin’s release.”

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “freedom of the press” like a gaggle of Euro-politicians marching in circles around a courtroom in Ankara—truly an inspiring sight for anyone who thought diplomacy was dead. 🙄 If only they could turn such fervor into a genuine holiday for journalists instead of just a quick trip! ✈️💼

Oh, brilliant move, folks! A whole delegation flying in just to remind Turkey that freedom of speech is kinda a thing in the EU—who knew? 🤔 Maybe they should’ve brought a cake too, you know, to sweeten the deal! 🎂

Oh, brilliant move sending a delegation all the way to Turkey, as if a few MEPs can convince them to release a journalist like it’s a lost umbrella at the train station. 🤦‍♂️ Good luck navigating the diplomatic waters, mates! 🥴

Oh, look at that – a charming little delegation of Swedish parliamentarians in Ankara, like tourists with a cause! 🤷‍♂️ Who knew that “insulting the president” would become the hottest ticket in town? Maybe they’ll take a selfie with Joakim as a souvenir. 📸

Oh, brilliant move, sending a delegation to Turkey—because nothing screams “let’s resolve this” quite like a bunch of politicians waving their badges in a foreign country. I suppose next, they’ll be offering a complimentary basket of Swedish meatballs as a peace offering! 😂🌍

Looks like the EU’s finest are off on a little jaunt to Ankara, proving that a few well-placed speeches can totally fix a journalist’s imprisonment—because nothing says “we care” like a trip to Turkey, right? 🍗✈️ #SolidarityInStyle

Oh, look at the Swedish Parliamentarians playing diplomat in Ankara! 🤔 Because clearly, a stern letter and a few MEPs in ties will convince Turkey to let a journalist go—next stop, the Nobel Peace Prize! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a bunch of European politicians gallivanting off to Turkey to save a journalist while the rest of us are just trying to figure out if our next cup of coffee comes with a side of existential dread. 🤷‍♂️🇸🇪

Oh joy, a high-powered Swedish delegation in Ankara—because nothing screams “we care” louder than a group of politicians waving their fingers at a country that thrives on boldness. 🍵💼 Let’s hope they bring some Swedish meatballs to soften the blow of their “serious” warnings!
