Stockholm – The European Parliament will discuss Turkey’s legal actions against Swedish journalist Joakim Medin.
Swedish MEPs from the Left Party, Jonas Sjöstedt and Hanna Gedin, together with Giorgos Georgiou from Cyprus, have introduced a resolution denouncing the charges against Medin. They call for his immediate release, along with other journalists imprisoned for “exercising their freedom of expression.”
This proposal is set for debate on Wednesday, with a vote scheduled for Thursday.
Medin was given a suspended sentence of just over 11 months after a trial in Ankara this week for insulting the president. He is also facing charges for allegedly participating in a terrorist organization and disseminating terrorist propaganda, and he remains in custody while awaiting a trial date for these additional charges.
In March, Medin traveled to Istanbul on assignment for the Swedish newspaper Dagens ETC to cover major protests in the country. He was arrested upon his arrival at the airport, marking his multiple visits to Turkey as a journalist.
According to Medin’s lawyer, he could face up to twelve years in prison if the charges are upheld.
