EU Parliament: Iran Must Release Djalali Without Delay

Strasbourg – A significant majority in the EU Parliament has called for the immediate release of imprisoned Swedish-Iranian researcher Ahmadreza Djalali.

The resolution, passed with 486 votes in favor and 8 against, is non-binding but aims to increase pressure on Iran.

“Sweden and the EU must intensify efforts to pressure Iran to abolish the death penalty and cease the imprisonment of dissenters,” stated Swedish Green Party member Alice Bah Kuhnke.

Ahmadreza Djalali has been imprisoned in Iran since 2016 when he attended a seminar on disaster medicine. He was sentenced to death on espionage charges, which he has consistently denied. During a controversial prisoner exchange between Sweden and Iran in 2024, he was not released and remains in the infamous Evin prison.

Looks like the EU Parliament is doing their usual dance—lots of clapping and shouting, but I guess it’ll take a miracle to get Iran to listen. Maybe they should just send a strongly-worded email or something. 😏📧

Oh, brilliant move, EU Parliament! A resolution that doesn’t do a thing but makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next time, just send a postcard to Iran—might have more impact! 📬

Imagine that! The EU Parliament, with its mighty 486 votes, has decided to *strongly suggest* Iran let Djalali go. I’m sure that’ll work wonders—nothing says ‘please release our friend’ quite like a non-binding resolution, right? 😂

Looks like the EU Parliament has got their work cut out for them, eh? Nothing says “we care” quite like a non-binding resolution and a hearty pat on the back for a job well done! 🙄🇪🇺

Prisoners in Iran must be on the edge of their seats, waiting for the EU Parliament to send another strongly worded letter. Who knew diplomacy could be so… effective? 😏✉️

Oh sure, because a resolution from the EU Parliament is exactly what Iran’s been waiting for to reconsider its prison policies. Maybe they’ll even throw in a complimentary “please” with the release. 🤷‍♂️
