BRUSSELS – The European Union will pause two sets of countermeasures against U.S. tariffs for six months following a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump, as announced by a spokesperson for the European Commission (EC) on Monday.
The agreement between the EU and the U.S. leaves several issues unresolved, such as tariffs on alcoholic beverages. Trump’s recent executive order imposing a 15 percent tariff on most imports from the EU does not provide an exemption for vehicles or their components.
European officials anticipate further regulations ahead.
“The EU is continuing discussions with the U.S. to finalize a joint statement as agreed on July 27,” the EC spokesperson said.
“In light of these aims, the EC will take the necessary action to suspend the EU’s countermeasures against the U.S. for six months, which were scheduled to begin on August 7.”
The European countermeasures consist of two sets: one in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, and the other regarding Trump’s basic tariffs and those applied to cars. (August 4, 2025.)
