EU lifts countermeasures on U.S. tariffs

BRUSSELS – The European Union will pause two sets of countermeasures against U.S. tariffs for six months following a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump, as announced by a spokesperson for the European Commission (EC) on Monday.

The agreement between the EU and the U.S. leaves several issues unresolved, such as tariffs on alcoholic beverages. Trump’s recent executive order imposing a 15 percent tariff on most imports from the EU does not provide an exemption for vehicles or their components.

European officials anticipate further regulations ahead.

“The EU is continuing discussions with the U.S. to finalize a joint statement as agreed on July 27,” the EC spokesperson said.

“In light of these aims, the EC will take the necessary action to suspend the EU’s countermeasures against the U.S. for six months, which were scheduled to begin on August 7.”

The European countermeasures consist of two sets: one in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, and the other regarding Trump’s basic tariffs and those applied to cars. (August 4, 2025.)

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a six-month pause on countermeasures to keep the trade relations as cozy as a rainy Sunday in London. 🍵 But hey, let’s not get too comfy – I’m sure the polite chats will lead to more delightful surprises for our wallets! 😏

  5. Talk about a temporary pause that feels more like a tea break at a boxing match! ☕️ Just what we needed, a six-month truce to keep the tariffs guessing – it’s like playing chess with a pigeon! 🕊️

Looks like the EU’s playing a game of “Simon Says” with the U.S. Tariffs on booze still up in the air, but hey, at least we can all enjoy a temporary peace treaty over a nice glass of vino! 🍷✌️
