EU leaders show strong support for Denmark and Greenland following Landry’s remarks

Brussels โ€“ The President of the European Council, Antonio Kosta, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed their complete solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland in identical posts on X. This follows comments from the newly appointed U.S. representative for Greenland, Jeff Landry, who stated he is โ€œhonored to serve for Greenland to become part of the USA.โ€

Kosta and von der Leyen emphasized, โ€œTerritorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law,โ€ highlighting that these principles are crucial not only for the European Union but also for nations worldwide.

Their statement noted that security in the Arctic region is a top priority for the European Union, which aims to collaborate with allies and partners to address these concerns.

In a separate response on X, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, reinforced that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with any alterations to this status being determined solely by the Greenlanders and Danes.

Kallas remarked, โ€œWe expect all our partners to respect their sovereignty and territorial integrity and to adhere to their international obligations, guaranteed among other things in the Charter of the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty,โ€ reiterating solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
