Brussels – Addressing customs duties remains a top priority for the EU. European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Sefcovic, highlighted ongoing communication with the United States, following a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, on Thursday.
A European source indicated that new discussions might occur on Tuesday or Wednesday during the OECD ministerial meeting in Paris, which involves primarily Western nations.
On Wednesday, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled that former President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing non-targeted tariffs, as such decisions fall under Congress’s jurisdiction.
Small businesses and a coalition of U.S. states brought this issue to court, resulting in judges granting the government ten days to retract its decision. However, within a day, an appeals court stayed the original ruling while it reviews the case. The European Commission did not provide comments on these legal proceedings. (May 30, 2025)
