EU countries have agreed to halt imports of Russian aluminum, despite last-minute concerns raised by Greece.
While downstream Russian aluminum products had already been restricted, the latest EU sanctions package extends the ban to primary aluminum. However, a limited amount of imports will still be permitted for a transition period before a full ban takes effect.
One major exclusion from the package is a complete ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). Several countries had pushed for such a measure, citing a recent increase in EU purchases.
However, the issue is now tied to ongoing trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. The EU has opted to delay potential restrictions on Russian LNG, as it seeks to secure a deal to import more American LNG instead.
