EU Considers Tariffs on Russian Oil Imports

Brussels – A proposal to impose tariffs on Russian oil will be presented by the Commission “in due time,” according to spokesperson Olof Gill on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, U.S. President criticized European purchases of Russian oil at the United Nations, labeling it “inexcusable” behavior.

“They are financing the war against themselves. Who has ever heard of such a thing?” he stated.

President Trump has linked the implementation of American sanctions against Russia to the cessation of these European imports.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, these imports have noticeably declined.

In the second quarter of this year, the EU spent 1.75 billion euros on Russian oil, a sharp decrease from nearly 29 billion during the same timeframe in 2021.

When the EU decided in 2022 to reduce its reliance on Russian oil, Hungary and Slovakia were granted exemptions due to their heavy dependence on this energy source. Any changes to this arrangement would need their consent. However, by introducing tariffs, Brussels aims to navigate this challenge. (September 24, 2025)

  1. Seems like Brussels has finally decided to play the game of “who can tax more” with a side of irony. It’s almost as if they’re trying to win an award for the slowest reaction to a crisis—bravo! 😂💶

  2. Looks like the EU’s finally figured out that buying oil from the guy who’s invading your neighbor is a tad dodgy, eh? 🤔 Guess it only took a few billion euros and a stern look from Uncle Sam to wake up!

Brilliant move, really! Why not slap a tariff on oil we barely buy anymore while we’re at it? Must be a clever way to show we’re doing something without actually doing much at all. 🤷‍♂️

So now we’re gonna tax the very oil we’ve been guzzling like there’s no tomorrow? Brilliant strategy, lads! 😂💰

Looks like Brussels is finally waking up to the fact that buying Russian oil while wagging a finger at them is a bit like paying for a ticket to your own funeral, innit? 💸🇪🇺

Tariffs on Russian oil? Brilliant idea! Nothing screams “strategic genius” like paying extra to finance your own dilemma. 💸🤷‍♂️

  7. Oh sure, because slapping a tariff on Russian oil is definitely going to solve all our problems, right? Just like adding a sprinkle of paprika makes a bland dish gourmet! 😂
