Strasbourg – Environment ministers from EU countries have reached an agreement on the approach to recycling and scrapping old vehicles during a meeting in Luxembourg.
Classic cars will continue to be recognized as part of “the moving cultural heritage.”
Poland’s climate and environment minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska stated in a press release, “The legislation will not only boost the competitiveness of our automotive and recycling sectors but also minimize bureaucracy.”
Concerns regarding the mandatory scrapping of older vehicles, raised when the EU Commission introduced its initial proposal in 2023, have been addressed. Countries will now be permitted to make exceptions for “vehicles of particular cultural interest,” as noted in the updated proposal.
The EU Parliament is also progressing toward a consensus on this issue, with a vote anticipated this fall before final negotiations commence. Swedish member Jonas Sjöstedt highlighted that the topic enjoys widespread support across political parties in Sweden.
“I believe that no Swedish party is going to challenge car enthusiasts,” he remarked at a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday, referencing a community passionate about American classic automobiles.
