EU Asserts “Sovereign Right” to Regulate Tech Following Trump’s Threats

Brussels – European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho stated on Tuesday that “it is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory in accordance with our democratic values.”

The EU also “firmly rejected” claims that American companies were being intentionally targeted by these digital regulations.

The American president criticized countries and organizations regulating the tech industry on Monday, threatening them with tariffs and export limitations.

In response, the Commission labeled the accusations of censorship from the Trump administration and tech companies as “totally erroneous.”

Meanwhile, the British government defended its 2% digital services tax (DST) on Tuesday, describing it as “fair and proportionate” in a statement requested by AFP. According to British media, the established thresholds mean that most of the revenue generated comes from major American corporations like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Meta. (August 26, 2025)

Looks like the EU’s taking a page from the “How to Annoy America” playbook—who knew sovereignty came with a side of tech regulations? 😂 Next, they’ll be charging us for breathing in their air!

Looks like the EU’s taking a page from the classic “not-so-subtle hint” book, eh? Must be nice to flex your regulatory muscles while sipping espresso in Brussels—just hope they don’t spill any on those precious tariffs! 😂🍵

Looks like the EU’s idea of “sovereign rights” is to play a cheeky game of economic chess while the US throws tantrums like a toddler in a toy store. 🍿🇪🇺

  5. Regulating tech? Oh, how original, EU! Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us how to brew our coffee too. ☕️😏

Oh, look at the EU flexing its muscles like a bodybuilder in a suit, all while claiming it’s just “democratic values” at play. Tariffs from Trump? Pfft, mate, we’ve got our own brand of techno-regulation to keep things just as lively! 😂

Regulating tech, eh? Who knew the EU had a ‘sovereign right’ to be the tech police while sipping espresso in Brussels? 😂 We should all be grateful for their ‘democratic values’ protecting us from those pesky American companies!

  8. Only in Europe do we turn the whole tech debate into a delightful game of “who can out-regulate whom” while sipping our espresso. 🇪🇺💼 Let’s just hope the tariffs don’t come with a side of crumpets! 🍵

Isn’t it charming how the EU insists on regulating tech like it’s a fine wine tasting? 🍷 Just can’t let those American giants have all the fun without a proper European stamp of approval, can we? 😏

Regulating tech, eh? Just what we need, another excuse for Brussels to flex its muscles and remind us who’s really in charge. 🇪🇺💪 As if the EU wasn’t already the world’s best at making everything more ‘complicated’—cheers to that! 🍻
