According to Braže, any diplomatic efforts must include Kyiv, but for a peace deal to be successful, Russia must first be weakened on the battlefield. “Russia’s politics, economics, religion, media, private sector—everything is geared toward war. Therefore, Russia must be forced into peace,” she stated.
On Wednesday, the Kremlin released a statement confirming that Trump and Putin had spoken for 90 minutes. Shortly afterward, the American president announced on Truth Social that both leaders had agreed to have their respective teams begin negotiations immediately.
“We will start by calling President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy of Ukraine to inform him about the conversation, which I will be doing right away,” Trump wrote.
Earlier that day, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Ukraine would not be joining NATO and emphasized that Europe must take responsibility for its own defense. In response, Zelenskyy forcefully rejected the remarks, saying, “Putin does not want to end the war” and urging Trump to offer “real security guarantees.”
Following his conversation with Trump, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to peace. “No one wants peace more than Ukraine. Together with the U.S., we are determining our next steps to stop Russian aggression and ensure lasting, reliable peace. As President Trump said, let’s get it done.”
He further noted that they had agreed to stay in contact and plan future discussions.
