Brussels – In a bid to establish long-term security in Gaza, the EU plans to propose training around three thousand police officers who are not affiliated with Hamas, the current ruling authority in the region, a European official disclosed on Wednesday, requesting anonymity.
The official emphasized the “need to stabilize Gaza with a substantial police force.”
This development follows the endorsement by the United Nations Security Council on Monday of President Donald Trump’s plan, which facilitated a ceasefire starting October 10. The initiative includes provisions for deploying an international force to manage borders with Israel and Egypt, demilitarizing Gaza, and disarming “non-state armed groups.”
The official noted that approximately 7,000 police officers in Gaza receive salaries from the Palestinian Authority, although many have retired or are no longer fit for duty; however, 3,000 can still undergo training.
The training is set to occur outside the Gaza Strip, according to the official. (November 19, 2025)
