She found herself tied to a man who transitioned from a “nice guy to a monster,” beating her “with his bare hands,” she said. said recently.
This young Yemeni mother is among the estimated 840 million women globally – nearly one in three – who have faced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, like a former or current husband.
Alarmingly, this number has barely shifted since 2000, with only a meager 0.2 percent annual decrease over the last two decades.
In just the past year, 11 percent of women aged 15 or older, about 316 million, have suffered physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.
An “omnipresent” injustice
“Violence against women is one of humanity’s oldest and most widespread injustices, yet it remains one of the least followed,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The lack of progress is highlighted in a report released Wednesday by the WHO and other United Nations agencies.
It examines data from 168 countries from 2000 to 2023, unveiling “a bleak picture of a deeply neglected crisis and a severely underfunded response.”
For the first time, national and regional estimates of sexual violence by non-partners – such as male relatives or friends – are included.
The findings indicate that 263 million women have suffered sexual violence by someone other than a partner since age 15, a number experts believe is vastly underestimated due to stigma and fear.
The financing gap persists
Despite growing evidence of effective strategies to prevent violence against women, WHO noted that financial support is continuously reduced.
In 2022, only 0.2% of global development assistance was allocated to these programs, with funding further declining.
This reduction occurs at a time when humanitarian emergencies, rising inequality, and other challenges threaten millions of women and girls.
Violence starts early
Women facing violence endure unwanted pregnancies, a higher risk of sexually transmitted infections, and depression, the report stated.
Additionally, violence against women begins early and persists throughout life. In the past year alone, 12.5 million young women aged 15 to 19 experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner.
“Data shows that many women first encounter partner violence as adolescents. Many children grow up witnessing their mothers being pushed, hit, or humiliated, where violence is a part of everyday life,” said Catherine Russell, executive director of the children’s rights agency, UNICEF.
Breaking this cycle is crucial, she added.

Seems like the world is doing a great job at ignoring the little issue of violence against women—really puts the “meh” in “human rights,” doesn’t it? 🤷♂️🥴
-
Oh, splendid! Just when I thought humanity had turned a corner, it turns out we’re still stuck in the same old muck. 🤦♂️ A bit of funding for women’s rights, anyone? Or are we saving that for a rainy day? 🌧️
-
Oh sure, let’s just throw a few coins into the fountain of goodwill and call it a day while we watch the same old tragedy unfold—who knew change would be so… stubborn? 🤷♂️
-
Typical, isn’t it? The world is all about gender equality, yet we still can’t seem to convince some blokes to keep their fists to themselves. 🙄
-
Blimey, it’s almost like society thinks dignity and equality are just trendy hashtags rather than urgent realities – but who needs action when you have a 0.2% annual decrease, right? 🙄 #Progress

If we’re discussing dignity and equality, one has to wonder if anyone’s actually paying attention or if we’re just stuck in a never-ending game of charades. 🙄 It’s like watching a snail race; you know it’s important, but good luck seeing any real progress!
-
Stunning how society can whip out a report on violence against women and still treat it like yesterday’s leftovers, eh? 🤷♂️ With only 0.2% of aid going to tackle this “omnipresent injustice,” it’s like saying, “Sure, let’s fix the leaky roof while we’re in a downpour!” 🌧️
-
Isn’t it just delightful how we keep talking about ending violence against women while the funding for it is lower than a pint at a dodgy pub? Cheers to progress at a snail’s pace! 🍻
-
Seems like we’ve mastered the art of ignoring the obvious. Maybe next time we’ll put a bow on it and call it progress? 🙄
-
This report on violence against women reads like a bad sitcom that just won’t get canceled – same plot, tragic actors, and not a single laugh track in sight. Honestly, at this rate, we might as well put the “fun” in “dysfunctional,” right? 😏📉
-
So, we’re still pretending that ending violence against women is a top priority? Brilliant strategy—let’s just keep it underfunded and ignored, shall we? 🙄💸
-
Isn’t it charming how 0.2% progress over two decades feels like a real triumph in our fast-paced modern world? 🥳 Clearly, we’ve got our priorities spot on, just like a fine wine – growing ever more expensive while the problem remains as vintage as ever. 🍷
-
Seems like we’re still in the Stone Age when it comes to addressing violence against women – just another day in paradise, eh? 🤷♂️ I guess the world thinks equality and dignity are just fancy words for a brochure! 👌
-
Blimey, if only there was a budget for human decency, we’d be out of this mess faster than a London cabbie can take you the long way round! 💸 Just goes to show, the only thing more persistent than this violence is the funding for it – absolutely top-notch, innit? 😏
-
You’d think after centuries, we’d have figured out how to treat women like actual humans, but here we are, still stuck in the dark ages. 🤦♂️ Maybe next time, instead of just a report, they could throw in a magic wand to make it all better!
-
Another report on violence against women? Brilliant, just what we need—more numbers to go with our underfunded solutions. Who knew fighting this age-old issue would be harder than selling ice to an Eskimo? 🤦♂️
-
Blimey, who knew that ending violence against women was just a wee suggestion on the to-do list, eh? 🙄 It’s like watching a tortoise in a race—slow and painfully underfunded!
-
Isn’t it just lovely that in a world full of tech and innovation, we still can’t figure out how to keep our women safe? Perhaps we should send a few more emails instead of actually doing something about it. 🤷♂️
-
Can’t help but chuckle at the irony here—while we’re all about “dignity and equality,” it seems the funding for ending violence against women is as scarce as a decent cup of coffee in a British café. ☕️🙄
