Empowering Farmers and Youth with the EU School Fruit, Vegetables, and Milk Program

“I have been appointed rapporteur for the recommendation on the amendments to the EU programme for the distribution of fruit, vegetables and milk in schools. During the meeting of the Committee on Regional Development, the first guidelines of the report were presented, and I announced my intention to strengthen European agricultural and food policies by reconnecting with territories and citizens, not only with markets.

This proposal to amend the regulation on school schemes and agricultural sectoral interventions is not an isolated technical adjustment, but a political choice that will have an impact on territorial cohesion, public health, food security and the resilience of our agricultural systems.

As rapporteur, we are working to reinforce a principle that is central to us: European agricultural and food policies must once again speak to territories and citizens, not only to markets.

This programme is one of the most concrete tools for health prevention and for reducing territorial inequalities. Data on childhood obesity clearly show that the least developed and most fragile regions pay the highest price. This is why we will insist that the programme should not be merely a distribution measure, but a genuine pathway of food education, linked to sustainability, local biodiversity and the fight against waste. Schools can and must become hubs of ecological literacy for local communities.

A second pillar is the creation of a European plant-protein sector. Our idea is to direct this sector towards marginal rural areas and less developed regions, supporting small farms, short supply chains and local employment. Regarding hemp, we wanted to clarify and strengthen its role as a strategic crop for the European bioeconomy, useful for soil regeneration and for the reconversion of abandoned industrial areas, especially in less developed regions. Here too, the goal is to create local supply chains and sustainable jobs.

As for sectoral interventions and market rules, our approach is to ensure transparency for consumers and security of supply, especially in times of crisis.

In conclusion, this amendment to the regulation represents an important step towards aligning European agricultural policies more closely with the needs of territories. Within the REGI Committee’s opinion, we will work to ensure that the proposed measures strengthen territorial cohesion, reduce regional disparities and support more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

The ultimate goal is to enhance the role of local and regional authorities, ensure a concrete impact of the school programme in terms of health and food education, and promote supply chains capable of creating value and employment, particularly in rural and less developed areas.

By doing so, we will help create a regulatory framework with a long-term vision, strengthening supply security and ensuring that this reform delivers real benefits for citizens and local communities.”

  1. Right, because nothing says “food education” quite like mandatory veggies for kids washed down with milk in a world where chocolate is king. 🍫🥛 Hope those Brussels sprout lessons come with a side of gourmet chocolate, or we’ll have a riot on our hands! 😅

Nothing says “empowerment” quite like shoving a few apples and a carton of milk into kids’ hands while politicians pat themselves on the back. 🍏🥛 It’s like putting a band-aid on a broken leg and calling it a healthcare reform! 😏

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “empowerment” like shoving more veggies and milk down kids’ throats while we pat ourselves on the back for saving the planet. 🥦🥛 #SustainabilityGoals

So, we’re teaching kids about food while boosting local farmers, eh? Reminds me of my last trip to the market—everyone’s selling apples, and I still can’t tell if they’re for eating or just for show! 🍏😏

Looks like the EU is finally turning schools into trendy health cafés; next stop, organic kale smoothies for the kids, right? 🍏🥛 Because nothing screams “empowerment” like a milk carton with a side of bureaucratic red tape! 😂

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “youth empowerment” like a mandatory school fruit scheme—because, obviously, kids are just dying to swap their crisps for kale. 🍏🥦

  7. Well, isn’t it just lovely that we’re finally giving kids fruit and milk instead of just sugar and screens? Next, maybe we’ll teach them how to grow their own kale in the schoolyard, because nothing screams “youth empowerment” quite like a patch of organic greens! 🍏🥛

  8. Great, so we’re putting veggies in schools now. Just what every child dreams of during recess—nothing says fun like a side of kale with your milk, eh? 😂🥬

  9. “Brilliant, so we’re turning schools into mini-farms while tackling obesity. Next, maybe we’ll have kids tilling the fields during recess! 🍏🚜”

Looks like we’re finally teaching the kids that a fruit isn’t just a fancy decoration for their milk carton! 🍏🥛 Who knew education could be so… fruitful?

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “empowerment” quite like pushing fruit and milk on kids while waving a flag of sustainability. 🍏🥛 Who knew that veggies could solve all our territorial woes? 🤷‍♂️

Right, because nothing says “empowering youth” quite like shoving more fruit and veg down their throats while they’re trying to figure out TikTok. 🍎🥦 Just what we needed—another EU scheme to turn schools into mini farms.

Oh, fantastic, just what we needed—a program to teach kids about fruit and milk! Because nothing says “empowerment” like a side of broccoli with your homework, right? 😂🍏

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “empowerment” quite like forcing kids to swap chocolate bars for Brussels sprouts under the watchful eye of EU overlords. 🍏🥦 #JustWhatWeNeeded
