Romania to Hold New Presidential Election After Court Annuls 2024 Vote
Romania is set to hold a new presidential election, with the first round scheduled for May 4 and a second-round runoff—if needed—expected on May 18. This comes after Romania’s Constitutional Court invalidated the previous election held in November 2024 due to concerns about potential Russian interference.
The earlier vote, which took place on November 24, 2024, and its scheduled December 8 runoff were both annulled by the court. The decision has sparked controversy, particularly among supporters of Călin Georgescu, a far-right candidate viewed as pro-Russian.
Donald Trump Jr. publicly criticized the Constitutional Court’s ruling in a social media post on December 7, describing it as a “Soros/Marxist attempt” to stop Georgescu from defeating centrist candidate Elena Lasconi. He referred to billionaire philanthropist George Soros, who is frequently criticized by conservative figures for backing liberal and progressive causes.
“Wow, look at what’s happening in Romania! The Constitutional Court just canceled the first round of their presidential election. Another Soros/Marxist attempt at rigging the outcome & denying the will of the people. She’s going to lose, and they know it,” Trump Jr. wrote on social media.
Trump Jr. is scheduled to visit Romania on April 28, just days before the first round of the rescheduled election. His visit was first reported by Romanian news outlet G4media.ro.
