A subsidiary of the German logistics company DHL Group, its express mail service DHL Express is a market leader in parcel services across Europe. DHL Express is Germany’s leading international courier and parcel service. DHL also operates a separate parcel service targeting the German consumer market in partnership with Deutsche Post.

Overview of DHL and Its Global Logistics Operations

DHL was founded in San Francisco, United States, in 1969 and expanded its services globally by the late 1970s. The name DHL is an acronym derived from the surnames of the company’s founders: Dalsey, Hillblom, and Lynn. Initially focused on offshore and intercontinental operations, DHL began its domestic (intra-US) expansion in 1983 in response to the success of FedEx. In 1998, Deutsche Post began acquiring shares in DHL.

By 2001, Deutsche Post had a controlling interest and completed the acquisition of all outstanding shares by December 2002. Deutsche Post integrated DHL into its Express division and extended the use of the DHL brand to other subsidiaries and business units. Today, DHL Express operates its brand alongside company units such as DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Supply Chain. In 2003, DHL gained a foothold in the United States by acquiring Airborne Express.

Over the years, DHL has been involved in various sponsorships. It was a primary sponsor of the Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder Le Mans prototypes in the International Motor Sports Association American Le Mans Series. Since 2011, the company has blank” rel=”noopener”>sponsored Ryan Hunter-Reay’s #28 IndyCar Series car for Andretti Autosport. DHL was also the title sponsor of the Jordan Formula One team in 2002.
