Bratislava – According to Tibor Gašpar, Deputy Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the absence of European Union representatives in initial peace talks regarding Ukraine could actually be beneficial. He expressed this view during the STVR Saturday Dialogues, emphasizing that their presence might hinder the chances of reaching a peaceful resolution. In contrast, his discussion partner, Irena Bihariová, a Member of the National Council and Vice-Chair of the PS movement, argued that both Europe and Ukraine must be represented in the upcoming talks, as reported by TASR.
Gašpar’s perspective is influenced by remarks from various EU officials and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who asserted that Ukraine needs to be in a strong position during negotiations. He also referenced President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for Europe to establish its own military force.
“These statements suggest a focus on escalating tensions rather than pursuing a peaceful solution,” Gašpar stated, recalling how former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson allegedly persuaded Zelensky against considering peace at the war’s onset.
Bihariová, on the other hand, argued for the necessity of European involvement in the peace discussions, asserting that world leaders tend to prioritize their own interests. She warned, “If American President Donald Trump were to negotiate peace with Vladimir Putin without Ukraine, it would likely neglect the interests of Europe, Ukraine, and the Slovak Republic.” She also criticized the approach of the new American administration towards Europe, particularly remarks made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference, where he accused Europe of limiting free speech. “Those who have manipulated public opinion and undermined election integrity are the last ones qualified to dictate standards for freedom of speech,” the opposition MP asserted.
Gašpar countered by arguing that the reactions from certain EU officials highlight “the failure of progressivism in Europe to engage in self-reflection.” He suggested that the American administration is addressing issues that the EU has chosen to ignore with its current leadership. He criticized the Union for its inability to negotiate peace with Russia or establish new geopolitical security guarantees. Bihariová echoed this sentiment, stating that discussing security guarantees is futile with parties that do not inspire trust in honoring their commitments. (February 15)
