Brussels (Eurotoday) – From April 30 to May 4, 2025, the Roads and Traffic Agency will carry out roadworks on the E40 motorway between Leuven and Brussels, specifically between Sterrebeek and Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, leading to anticipated traffic delays. Travellers, particularly those heading to Brussels Airport, are advised to consider alternative routes.
Beginning on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 8 p.m. and continuing through Sunday, May 4, 2025, the Roads and Traffic Agency will undertake repairs on a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the E40. The targeted section between Sterrebeek and Sint-Stevens-Woluwe suffers from deep ruts caused by heavy truck traffic and needs urgent resurfacing.
Officials stressed that this work is essential for road safety. Due to the construction, the highway will be narrowed from four lanes to just two lanes in Sterrebeek, which is expected to cause significant congestion—especially during commuting hours. Additionally, exits to the Brussels Ring (R0) at Sint-Stevens-Woluwe in the direction of Brussels will be closed during the project, further complicating traffic flow.
How will the E40 roadwork between Leuven and Brussels impact drivers?
To help reduce congestion, officials have proposed alternative routes for motorists. Those heading for the Brussels Ring should continue past the closed Sint-Stevens-Woluwe section on the E40 towards Brussels, exit at Evere, and then rejoin the highway to access the Ring.
Another option is to exit at Kraainem and take the Woluwelaan (R22), which connects to the Ring and serves destinations in the eastern suburbs. Authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead, allow more travel time, and consult real-time traffic updates before setting out.
“If you want to drive from Leuven or Limburg to Brussels Airport or the coast, it is better to allow some extra travel time,”
officials advised.
Travel disruptions are particularly likely on Thursday, May 1, 2025, due to the ongoing roadworks. Motorists travelling from Leuven or Limburg to Brussels or the coast, especially Brussels Airport, will feel the greatest impact. The closure of the Sterrebeek slip road on the E40 heading into Brussels could also trigger congestion on the Leuvensesteenweg in Nossegem.
Drivers are advised to build in extra travel time, particularly during morning and evening peak hours. The combination of motorway works and weekend traffic may result in longer delays, especially for those relying on the E40 to access key destinations such as Brussels Airport.
The construction work includes resurfacing the right lane and the connector to the Brussels Ring. Crews will remove up to 20 centimetres of old asphalt before rebuilding the roadway with three new layers and fresh markings. The process will involve a convoy of large asphalting machines working efficiently in sequence. Throughout the project, traffic on the E40 will be restricted to just two lanes.
