Up to 1,000 people are feared dead following a tragedy in Tarsin village, Jebel Marra range, on the border of Central and South Darfur states, which occurred on Sunday. The landslide was caused by days of heavy rain.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Sudan at this tragic time,” said Luca Renda, interim UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator in the country, in a statement. The UN and partners are mobilizing to provide support to the affected population.
“The humanitarian community stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and will spare no effort to ensure that aid can reach those in need without delay,” he added.
The UN migration agency IOM expressed sadness over the loss of life due to the catastrophic landslide, which stands as one of the deadliest disasters in Sudan’s recent history. This tragedy occurs amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has displaced millions since April 2023.
The Marrah Mountains have served as a refuge for families fleeing violence from El Fasher in North Darfur and surrounding areas. “The area remains largely inaccessible to humanitarian organizations due to ongoing conflict and restrictions, worsening the hardship of those affected,” IOM noted.
The agency urged all conflict parties to ensure the safety of aid workers and civilians, adhering to international humanitarian law.
