European Council President Antonio Costa expressed concerns on Friday regarding the sanctions imposed by the United States on the International Criminal Court (ICC), warning that they jeopardize the court’s independence and weaken the global criminal justice system. These sanctions, enacted by former President Donald Trump, are viewed as retaliatory measures.
Costa reiterated the European Union’s commitment to combating impunity and ensuring accountability for violators of international law.
On Thursday, Trump issued an executive order that implements financial and visa sanctions targeting the ICC and individuals involved in prosecuting Americans, as well as officials from Israel and other allied nations. This decision came in response to the ICC’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During a meeting with ICC President Tomoko Akane on the same day, Costa highlighted the vital role the ICC plays in administering justice for some of the most serious crimes against humanity. (02/07/2025)
