Brussels – On Thursday, MEPs voted to reduce the scope of the “duty of vigilance” law, with a result of 382 votes in favor and 249 against, limiting the number of companies affected and removing certain obligations.
This move, marked by an unusual alliance between the EPP and far-right groups, has sparked significant backlash from other political factions.
Social democrat René Repasi criticized the EPP for undermining moderate compromise.
This decision serves as a warning to the pro-European coalition as the Parliament begins discussions on the “simplification” of business regulations. The far right celebrated this as a major victory.
The law, enacted in 2024, mandated that companies with over 1,000 employees take measures to prevent and address human rights abuses (such as child labor and forced labor) and environmental harm throughout their supply chains globally, under the threat of penalties. (November 13, 2025)
