Ghent Welcomes New Festival COPA DOK Launching with Manu Chao in 2025
Ghent – A fresh addition to Belgium’s cultural calendar is on the horizon. COPA DOK, a new festival centered on social engagement, community, and independent artists, will debut in Ghent from May 21 to May 23, 2025. The event will kick off with a performance from acclaimed French-Spanish artist Manu Chao, known for his eclectic sound and socially conscious lyrics.
Set against the backdrop of an old industrial site near Gent-Dampoort, COPA DOK aims to offer more than just live music. Its lineup and concept promise a socially driven, community-focused experience that sets it apart from traditional Belgian festivals. Organizers emphasize that the event’s spirit mirrors Manu Chao’s music — a mix of activism, multiculturalism, and creativity.
Manu Chao rose to fame in the late 1990s after his tenure with Mano Negra, a punk-rock band behind hits like “King Kong Five” and “Out of Time Man.” As a solo artist, Chao became globally recognized with songs such as “Me Gustas Tú” that blend genres and address issues like immigration, justice, and inequality. His commitment to these values makes him an ideal figure to headline COPA DOK’s inaugural edition.
Will COPA DOK Transform Ghent’s Festival Landscape?
Festival organizers are clear about their intentions: COPA DOK is not a conventional festival. It’s a progressive cultural initiative with a social mission. According to festival coordinator Joachim Matthys, “COPA DOK is not a traditional festival, but a social initiative with a strong following and support from residents and creatives.”
In line with Chao’s principles, the event will not be backed by large corporate sponsors. Instead, it will focus on grassroots participation and community ownership. The artistic program promises a variety of genres and performers, although the full lineup has yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Ghent’s longstanding Copacobana Festival, held annually in Rozebroekenpark, continues to face financial hurdles. Due to unpredictable weather patterns affecting attendance and on-site revenue, organizers recently sought city approval to charge a modest admission fee to stabilize finances.
However, the City of Ghent declined the proposal, noting that the festival is held on public grounds and already benefits from municipal subsidies. These funds require the festival to remain free and accessible to the public.
Despite these setbacks, the Copacobana Festival has secured continued support from the city. It will receive an annual subsidy of €30,000 for the next three years, allowing the popular event to keep going. Organizers plan to maintain the festival’s inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere, featuring performances from local musicians, culinary offerings, and community activities. They also aim to increase volunteer involvement to strengthen local engagement.
