Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun Calls for Greater Unity to Prevent ‘Law of the Jungle’

Beijing (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Chinese defence minister boasted about Beijing’s push to reshape global governance, cautioning on Thursday against a world growing more divided “defined by the rule of the jungle”. He also emphasised that his country’s robust military would be a force for peace.

These comments come amid growing tensions between Beijing and Washington, as well as its allies and partners, over key issues in East Asia, including Taiwan and the South China Sea, along with broader economic rivalries under US President Donald Trump.

What concerns did the Chinese defence minister raise in Beijing?

At the official opening of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on security, Dong Jun stated that the world is at a critical juncture, dominated by Cold War ideologies, power struggles, and trade barriers, and must prioritise dialogue over conflict.

“External military interference, seeking spheres of influence, and coercing others to take sides will bring the international community into chaos,”

Dong added.

How do China’s tensions with the us shape these remarks?

As reported by Reuters, his comments included subtle digs at the United States and seemed more hawkish than his speech at last year’s event, especially when discussing issues like tension over democratic Taiwan.

“An obsession with absolute superiority in military strength and a ‘might is right’ approach will lead to a divided world defined by the rule of the jungle and disorder,”

Dong said. He also said a strong Chinese military would be a force for peace.

These comments come after President Xi Jinping‘s recent speeches against “hegemonism and power politics,” as well as this month’s massive military parade in Beijing that showcased a range of new weapons.

What did U.S. Defence Secretary and Dong discuss over a phone call?

Last week, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke with Dong over the telephone in their first direct engagement. They agreed to maintain open communication channels, avoid conflict, and respect mutual core interests such as Taiwan and the South China Sea, emphasising a candid and constructive military dialogue.

What will Trump and Xi discuss in their upcoming call?

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to have a telephone exchange on Friday, September 19, 2025.

Funny how the guy in charge of the world’s biggest military is suddenly worried about a ‘jungle law’—maybe he should try a nice walk in the park instead. 😂 Just what we need, more unity talks from the land of ‘peace through strength’!

  2. Seems like the Chinese Defence Minister is really pushing for unity while flexing their military muscles—nothing says “let’s all get along” quite like a show of force, eh? 😂 Guess it’s all about peace in the jungle, just don’t forget to watch your back! 🐒

Seems like the Chinese defence minister is auditioning for the role of peacekeeper while juggling a military parade—talk about a multitasker! 😂 If only his calls for unity came with an actual plan, eh?

Seems like the Chinese Defence Minister is really pushing for unity, probably because ‘law of the jungle’ sounds so much nicer than ‘everyone for themselves’! 🐒💼 What a charming twist on international relations, eh?

Looks like the Chinese Defence Minister has taken his ‘peacekeeping’ lessons from a jungle survival guide! 🐒 Who knew military might could also mean a cozy chat over tea? 😂

  6. Seems like the big guy in Beijing is ready to play peacekeeper while flexing his military muscles—talk about a mixed message! 🥴 If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was auditioning for a role in a blockbuster titled “Diplomacy: The Musical”. 🎭

Nice to see the Chinese Defence Minister advocating for unity while flexing military muscles like a bodybuilder at a protein shake convention. 😂 Clearly, peace comes wrapped in a nice shiny package of threats and posturing!

  8. Looks like the jungle’s not just for Tarzan anymore; it’s the latest theme park attraction in geopolitical debates! 🎢💼 Who knew a strong military could also be a “force for peace”? 😂

Oh sure, because nothing screams “peace” like flexing military muscle while warning against the “law of the jungle.” 🤔 Classic case of “do as I say, not as I do,” innit?

“Right, because nothing screams ‘peace’ like parading military might while wagging a finger at the ‘jungle law’. Classic diplomacy, mate! 😂”

Looks like China’s new motto is “unity or else!”—nothing like a little jungle law to spice up international relations, eh? 🐅🌍

  12. Looks like Dong Jun’s idea of “peace” is just a fancy way of saying, “Let’s all agree to not fight… until I finish my military upgrades.” 😂 What a charmer!
