Canada and European NATO countries are pledging to significantly increase defense spending, a move to be confirmed by alliance leaders at their Hague summit starting Wednesday.
“NATO is our collective defense cornerstone, but this partnership enhances our readiness, enabling smarter and increased investments,” said European Council President António Costa at a summit press conference.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the partnership will enhance Canada’s role in Europe’s defense framework. “This is just the beginning,” she remarked.
“It will benefit our industries, our people, and the transatlantic security collaboration.”
Von der Leyen mentioned that Carney was among friends in Brussels.
According to a joint statement released Monday, Ottawa will collaborate with Brussels on a bilateral deal tied to the EU’s €150 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) plan. This program, for EU states and close allies, provides loans for weapon purchases and allows joint procurements.
