SOFIA – The ongoing dialogue between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the ambassadors of the European Union (EU) in Bulgaria is crucial, as both parties share a unified vision for the future and face similar challenges. This sentiment was expressed by Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev during his meeting with EU ambassadors accredited in Sofia, according to the MFA’s report.
The gathering was hosted by the Polish Embassy, as Poland currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council. Minister Georgiev underscored the importance of solidarity within the EU, particularly amidst a shifting geopolitical landscape and external threats.
During the meeting, the minister addressed key topics related to the European agenda and Bulgaria’s foreign policy priorities. He highlighted that joining the Eurozone remains a top priority for the country, and emphasized that Bulgarian institutions are making significant strides towards achieving this objective.
Georgiev also noted Bulgaria’s advancements in the process of joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), stating, “Our aim is to conclude the technical phase of this process by the end of 2025 or early 2026.”
The discussions between the foreign minister and the European ambassadors also covered important international issues, including the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as other relevant topics on the global agenda. The expansion of the EU was also on the agenda, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the principle of meritocracy in meeting conditions and commitments.
Earlier this year, Georgiev addressed the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Policy, Marta Kos, regarding the European integration process for the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova during a meeting of the EU Council on foreign affairs in Brussels. He also engaged in discussions with Kaja Kallas, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and with the foreign ministers of Romania and Italy. (February 11)
