Budapest – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban labeled the Pride march that took place in Budapest on Saturday as a “shame” in his first public reaction, as reported in excerpts from a televised interview scheduled for broadcast on Monday evening.
“I do not regard what occurred as a source of pride. (…) I consider it a shame,” Mr. Orban expressed.
The event, which featured a large, festive crowd led by the green mayor of the capital, took place amidst an unprecedented decline in LGBT+ rights within the EU.
Following the march, the government accused the opposition of acting “at the behest of Brussels,” claiming they sought to undermine laws they disagreed with, mocked Hungary’s sovereignty, and attempted to impose a woke culture with foreign backing.
In March, Mr. Orban enacted new legislation designed to prohibit any demonstration that could expose minors to homosexuality and transgender identity. (June 30, 2025)
