Brussels (Eurotoday) – Three Brussels metro stations—Ribaucourt, Simonis (Elisabeth), and IJzer—were evacuated Saturday evening following a smoke incident aboard a metro carriage at Ribaucourt station. The Brussels fire brigade and the city’s public transport company MIVB confirmed the emergency response.
Shortly after reports of smoke emerging from a metro train at Ribaucourt, emergency responders swiftly arrived on the scene, extinguished the fire, and ordered the evacuation of nearby stations. As a safety measure, metro services on lines 2 and 6 were temporarily suspended between Simonis (Elisabeth) and Kunst-Wet.
The Brussels fire department and the public transport operator MIVB/STIB released updates following the incident, as reported by VRT.
History of Smoke and Safety Incidents in the Brussels Metro
Safety incidents, both accidental and deliberate, have impacted the Brussels Metro system over the years. One of the most tragic events occurred in 2016, when a suicide bombing at Maelbeek/Maalbeek station claimed 32 lives and injured more than 300 people, highlighting the vulnerability of urban transit systems to terrorist threats. At the time, the attack caused widespread disruption and intensified security concerns, as covered by the BBC.
In addition to security issues, the metro has also been affected by social tensions, including episodes related to the city’s drug crisis and frequent interruptions from labor strikes. Operational disruptions resulting from fires, technical malfunctions, and passenger-related incidents are not uncommon, particularly in the older sections of the metro infrastructure. Emergency services generally respond promptly, but such situations often necessitate temporary station closures and thorough safety inspections before normal service can resume.
