Brussels Metro Train Sheds Two Carriages on Lines 2 and 6

Brussels (Eurotoday) – On March 26, 2025, an incident disrupted metro service on Brussels lines 2 and 6 when two train carriages detached near the Simonis-Elisabeth station. The operator NMBS/MIVB acted swiftly, stopping the train to prevent injuries. Spokesperson Vermeersch confirmed that an investigation is underway.

The event occurred during the evening rush hour as the metro train was departing Simonis-Elisabeth station, heading toward Ribaucourt. While en route, two carriages unexpectedly separated from the rest of the train.

The metro control center, which continuously monitors train operations, detected the issue quickly. The train driver was instructed to stop the train immediately, and emergency teams responded promptly. Fortunately, all passengers in the detached carriages were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.

Why Did the Metro Carriages Detach on Brussels Lines 2 and 6?

Authorities are currently investigating what led to the detachment of the train carriages. Simonis-Elisabeth is one of Brussels’ main interchange stations, serving as the final stop for both metro lines 2 and 6. It is typically busy at peak times. The train was heading toward Ribaucourt station, located beneath a major road in the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean district.

Given the central role of the metro system in daily travel across Brussels, safety assessments are being prioritized. The metro operator, NMBS/MIVB, has committed to sharing updates as more information becomes available.

The detached carriages have been taken to a train yard for close examination by technical experts. They are trying to determine whether the cause was mechanical failure or human error. According to spokesperson Vermeersch, such incidents are extremely rare. He added that staff are being consulted to find out if any similar incidents have occurred in the past.

Vermeersch emphasized that the potential danger posed by separating train cars during passenger service makes this a top-priority issue. The investigation is focused on identifying any faults or procedural lapses that might have contributed to the incident to ensure such an event does not happen again.

Despite the disruption, metro service on lines 2 and 6 resumed within 30 minutes. Commuters were able to continue their journeys with minimal delays. Investigators are expected to release a full report once their review is complete.

Only in Brussels would a rush hour train experience a ‘light’ divorce with two of its carriages—who knew the metro was trying to be as dramatic as our politics? 🚇💔 Just don’t expect any refunds for the “interesting” ride! 😂
