The recent appointment of Johannes Hahn has been hailed as a reaffirmation of the European Commission’s dedication to the reunification of Cyprus. In an official statement, the Commission emphasized that Hahn’s designation highlights its commitment to achieving a comprehensive, functional, and sustainable resolution that aligns with United Nations Security Council resolutions and EU principles, values, and legislation.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the news, describing Hahn’s selection as “tangible proof that the EU stands firmly and resolutely with Cyprus and its people.”
Efforts to resolve the decades-old division of Cyprus have repeatedly faltered, with the most recent talks collapsing in 2017 during negotiations in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Since then, formal reunification talks have remained stalled — marking the longest pause in the peace process to date. However, a renewed push is underway, with the UN Secretary-General convening an informal meeting in Geneva this past March and another scheduled for late July.
Johannes Hahn brings considerable experience to the role, having served as a European Commissioner for 14 years from 2010 until 2023. Over the course of his tenure, he was responsible for regional policy, European neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations, and finally, the EU’s budget and administration. Hahn is affiliated with Austria’s center-right People’s Party, a member of the European People’s Party — the same political bloc as President Christodoulides.
