The UN-backed hunger experts warn that over 7.56 million people in South Sudan, more than half the population, will face crisis or severe hunger levels between April and July 2026. According to the United Nations World Food Program, more than two million children could suffer from acute malnutrition during this period. Food insecurity is worsening in parts of South Sudan.
UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that they have consistently warned about the country’s serious food and nutrition crisis. The greatest fears are for the 28,000 people in Luakpiny/Nasir and Fangak counties, where hunger levels are catastrophic, as reported by the IPC, a recognized authority on monitoring extreme hunger.
Tsunamis have claimed over 260,000 lives in the past 100 years, the United Nations disaster risk reduction agency notes. The theme of this year’s World Tsunami Awareness Day is “Be Tsunami Prepared: Invest in Tsunami Preparedness.” Tsunamis, though rare, are highly destructive. UNDRR Chief Kamal Kashore emphasized the importance of investing in tsunami preparedness and resilience.

Rapid urbanization in tsunami-prone regions increases risk, highlighting the need for improved early warning systems, as stated by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon report increased military activities along the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel. Over the past two days, more than 100 IDF vehicles moved in the eastern sector and 60 in the western sector, including Markava tanks. Peacekeepers observed small arms fire near Kfar Shouba and Shab’a. UNIFIL continues joint patrols and training with the Lebanese army and stresses the obligation of parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel and assets.
