Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump, stating, “He could go on to be a great philanthropist. In the meantime, the world’s richest man has been involved in the deaths of the world’s poorest children.”
Despite having previously maintained cordial relations with Trump, including a post-reelection dinner that lasted three hours, Gates had told The New Yorker, “We are not going into opposition. We are continuing the partnership we’ve had with every administration.”
However, Gates’ tone has shifted following significant policy changes under Trump’s leadership. The former president has implemented sweeping cuts to global health funding and announced the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), actions that have pushed the agency into a deepening financial crisis.
These developments have led to increasing internal pressure on Gates within his own foundation. Reports suggest that key staff and partners are urging him to take a stronger stance against the Trump administration and step in to help close the widening global health funding gap.
