A Belgian security service officer has been arrested and charged with espionage, according to two sources familiar with the situation who spoke to POLITICO.
The officer was detained on Thursday, and his residence was searched that day. An investigating judge later released him under strict conditions.
The charges involve spying for China, as per one source, who noted that the individual, whose exact position within Belgium’s national security is undisclosed, was recruited due to his access to Brussels’ international diplomatic circles.
Brussels hosts numerous EU institutions, NATO headquarters, around 100 international organizations, and 300 foreign diplomatic missions.
This arrest occurs as pressure mounts on Belgium’s security agencies. In February, the Belgian publication Le Soir reported that Chinese hackers had breached state security systems from 2021 to 2023, marking the agency’s largest-ever data breach.
