Tsikhanovski’s arrest triggered widespread protests in Belarus, which did not lead to the removal of its authoritarian leader, Lukashenko. The opposition leader’s wife, Tsikhanouskaya, was forced into exile in Lithuania after Lukashenko claimed victory in the disputed 2020 elections.
Russian media outlet RBC identified journalist Igor Karney and Minsk academic Natalia Dulina among the other released prisoners.
Kellogg’s visit to Belarus was organized to secure the release of prisoners and to encourage the country to align more with the West, aiming to foster a favorable environment for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
