In her speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Mottley warned that truth, confidence, and equity are being crushed by war, inequality, and the climate crisis. She emphasized that only a system based on rules can ensure the survival of countries of varying sizes, capacities, and cultures. Mottley cautioned that “jungle law” does not secure a future or a habitable planet. She highlighted a “crisis of truth” that undermines institutions, erodes trust between citizens and governments, and transforms news, science, and law into something tawdry.
On conflicts, Mottley reiterated the need for peace in Ukraine and urged the world not to overlook suffering elsewhere, such as in Sudan and Gaza. She called for humanitarian funding, stating $66 million is needed for Gaza’s children and $200 million for Sudan to cover essentials.
Regarding climate change, Mottley urged leaders to act urgently and honestly. She supported a global framework on methane to combat temperature rise and criticized insufficient climate financing. She linked climate and development to global governance reform, insisting on equity in resource distribution and urging reforms in the UN Security Council to reflect today’s multipolar world.
Mottley concluded with a poignant image of a young Palestinian girl carrying her sister through Gaza rubble, urging leaders to find hope and resilience like this child. She called for the world to invoke the same will to face current challenges.
