A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants for 50 individuals, including Tulip Siddiq’s mother, Hasina, and several other relatives, according to Bangladesh’s state-run news agency BSS. The BBC reports that court documents reveal Siddiq is accused of playing a role in facilitating a 2013 deal with Russia that allegedly inflated the cost of constructing a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
In response, a spokesperson for Siddiq has firmly denied the allegations, calling them “completely false” and “politically motivated.”
Separately, Siddiq has also come under scrutiny in the United Kingdom, where the Cabinet Office’s ethics committee has questioned her over embezzlement accusations tied to the multibillion-pound nuclear agreement involving Bangladesh and Russia.
Under mounting pressure due to the ongoing investigation, Siddiq resigned from her role as a Treasury minister in January. Despite the developments, the U.K. Prime Minister’s standards adviser, Laurie Magnus, stated at the time that there was “no evidence of improprieties,” according to the BBC.
