Prague – Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) affirmed today that Greenland is an essential part of Denmark during a press conference. He commended US President Donald Trump for altering his rhetoric and abstaining from imposing additional tariffs on certain European nations. Following an afternoon meeting with trade unions, Babiš expressed that he anticipated Trump’s shift in position based on his prior experiences with the president’s negotiation style.
“It is clear that we are allies, and we cannot afford any disputes between the United States and Denmark. Greenland is undeniably an integral part of Denmark. President Trump has indeed changed his rhetoric. We emphasized the necessity of reaching an agreement,” Babiš stated.
“We understand President Trump’s negotiation tactics. As we expected, he announced yesterday that he is retracting the tariffs, which is positive news,” the prime minister remarked. He noted that he had foreseen this outcome, recognizing Trump’s approach to negotiation as a businessman. “I believe this preliminary agreement is promising, as NATO will collectively oversee Greenland,” he added, citing the genuine threats posed by Russia and China and highlighting Greenland’s strategic significance.
According to Politico, the EU is striving for a cohesive stance regarding President Trump’s actions, with Babiš being a key figure among the leaders. The online platform identifies five distinct groups of politicians, each characterized by their perspective on the American president, and has named the Czech prime minister as a leader among Trump’s supporters. This marks only the second summit since Babiš, a billionaire businessman, resumed his position. His influence may be pivotal in showcasing EU unity. He has previously lightheartedly claimed to have purchased a globe to locate Greenland and acknowledged the legitimacy of Trump’s concerns regarding Russia and China while advocating for a peaceful resolution to maintain NATO’s integrity.
