Authorities Issue Warning About Increasing Police Impersonation Scams in Dendermonde

Dendermonde (Eurotoday): Scammers are pretending to be police officers, making alarming claims about stolen items and burglaries. Police Chief Patrick Feys warns people not to share personal information. Four scams have been reported, with one victim losing money after handing over her bank card to a fake officer.

Scammers are deceiving people by blank” rel=”noopener”>pretending to be police officers. They make frightening phone calls, claiming stolen items connected to the victim have been found or that their home is on a burglary list. These false statements are designed to create fear and manipulate victims into cooperating. To appear credible, scammers use official-sounding language and fake badge numbers. Their goal is to make victims believe they are in grave trouble.

How can Dendermonde residents protect themselves from police impersonation scams?

These scammers also visit homes after gaining people’s trust. They claim they need to secure the victim’s valuables or protect them from a made-up burglary threat. If successful, they steal money, valuables, or personal information. Police Chief Patrick Feys emphasizes that real police officers do not behave in this manner. He advises anyone who receives such calls not to divulge personal information and to confirm the legitimacy of the claims with their local police station. Staying vigilant is key to avoiding these scams.

Police have documented four cases of such scams, with one victim losing money after handing her bank card to individuals impersonating police officers. These scammers visited her home under the pretense of securing her valuables. It is recommended that residents verify the authenticity of police calls by listening for a recorded message at the start. If in doubt, ask for the caller’s name, hang up, and call the police back to verify. This ensures communication is with legitimate authorities.
