The iPhone manufacturer previously cautioned that European users would be unable to access the real-time translation feature via their earbuds due to its interpretation of obligations under the EU’s regulations for major tech platforms, the Digital Markets Act.
The EU regulations require specific features in Apple’s phones and tablets to ensure compatibility with competitor devices. Apple has contested these requirements in EU courts.
Apple stated that they had to create a “complicated” solution to comply with the DMA, developing a new audio-routing API so third-party apps and devices could handle simultaneous audio paths.
Apple argues that if they had implemented the feature earlier, they might have been fined and prohibited from selling products in the EU.
An Apple spokesperson expressed concern that the European Commission’s “aggressive” interpretation of the rules is putting “users at risk and is detrimental to innovation.”
“In the EU, our digital legislation aims to preserve innovation and freedom of choice,” stated a European Commission spokesperson. “And this is what we witness today.”
