Antwerp (Eurotoday) – Antwerp police rescued a dog left inside a hot car at Mastplein, issuing two fines to the pet’s owner. Authorities continue to warn against leaving animals in vehicles, even with windows slightly open, due to the dangerous heat buildup.
According to VRT News, the Antwerp police are actively working to prevent such incidents. They are once again reminding the public that leaving a car window open slightly does not provide sufficient ventilation to keep pets safe in the heat.
Wouter Bruyns, a spokesperson for the Antwerp police, expressed concern that pet owners continue to leave animals in hot cars, despite widespread awareness of the risks. He emphasized that parked vehicles can quickly become dangerously hot, even when outdoor temperatures seem mild. Without access to water and fresh air, animals can suffer heat exhaustion or worse.
Why did Antwerp police rescue a dog from a hot car?
On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, police responded to a call at Mastplein after a dog was spotted locked in a car parked under the sun. Officers found the vehicle with a slightly open window and an agitated dog barking from the back seat. Fortunately, the car was unlocked, allowing police to open the door and blank”>rescue the dog quickly.
Bruyns explained that while the dog appeared distressed, sweating, and thirsty, it had not yet suffered serious harm. Officers ensured the dog was properly cared for and monitored before confirming its condition. The outside temperature at the time was around 24°C, but the inside of the car was likely significantly hotter.
He added that vehicle interiors can overheat rapidly, even if it doesn’t feel hot outside. Because of this, the police urged pet owners to never leave animals unattended in parked cars — even for a short time or with windows open.
The dog’s owner was issued two fines for neglect. Authorities reiterated that leaving a dog in a hot car is both unsafe and irresponsible, no matter how brief the absence. Police encouraged anyone unable to bring their pet with them to find alternative arrangements — such as securing the dog in a shaded area with water outside — instead of leaving them in vehicles.
Through continued public awareness efforts, the Antwerp police hope to prevent similar situations and keep pets safe during warm weather.
