Ancient Care Facility Found Near Sea of Galilee

Archaeologists in Israel have uncovered a structure nearly 1,600 years old, possibly the first organized institution for elder care. This discovery, near the Sea of Galilee in Hippos National Park, features a mosaic with a Greek inscription revealing its special purpose. The mosaic reads “Peace to the Elderly” and is believed to date back to the 4th or early 5th century AD. Positioned in a residential area of ancient Hippos, the inscription suggests the building’s public function related to elder care. This is the first material evidence of an institution for the elderly, a breakthrough in understanding ancient social systems. Dr. Michael Eisenberg from the University of Haifa led the excavation, emphasizing its significance in showing early integration of elder care into society. The inscription indicates an official home for the elderly, a rare find in archaeology. Hippos, also known as Susita, was a significant Byzantine Christian city with notable public architecture. The facility, located at a crossroads, highlights its role in urban life. Excavations in 2023 and 2024 fully revealed the mosaic, likely placed at the entrance as a spiritual blessing and welcome. The institution reflects early Christian values of social responsibility beyond family structures.

A 1,600-year-old care facility, eh? I guess even in the 5th century, they knew how to throw their elders a retirement party—complete with Greek inscriptions! 😂 Who knew the past could teach us so much about modern-day nursing homes?

A 1,600-year-old nursing home? Talk about taking “senior living” to a whole new level! 😏 Next, they’ll be telling us that the Romans had a spa for the over-65s. What’s next, a retirement plan from the Pharaohs? 🏺💸

  5. Looks like the ancients really knew how to treat their elders, eh? Just imagine the staff training sessions: “Welcome to the world’s first nursing home, now don’t forget to add ‘peace’ to your job description!” 😂🏛️

Imagine finding a retirement home older than your granny’s last bingo night! 🏡😂 Seems like even back in the day, they knew how to keep the old folks cozy while waiting for the next divine intervention!

  12. Just what we needed, an ancient nursing home—because who wouldn’t want a 1,600-year-old facility for their golden years? 😂 I suppose they didn’t have bingo nights back then, eh? 🏺🍷

Oh, fantastic! A 1,600-year-old retirement home, just what we needed to tackle the modern-age problem of elder care! 😂 Who knew the ancient folks had it all figured out while we’re still fumbling about with bingo nights and awkward family visits?

Just what we needed, another reminder that the Romans were organizing elder care before we even figured out how to properly brew a cuppa. Next, they’ll find a sign saying “Welcome to the Ancient Retirement Home, WiFi not included” 😂🏛️.

Just what we needed, an ancient nursing home to remind us that even back then, they were better at caring for the elderly than we are today. 😂 “Peace to the Elderly”? More like “Peace out, we’re out of here!”

  16. Sounds like they finally found the elder care facility everyone’s been raving about since the 5th century! 😂 Guess some traditions never die—especially the part about waiting for staff to bring your tea! 🫖
