Aleppo Conflict in Syria Causes Civilian Casualties and Displaces Thousands

Clashes resumed on Tuesday between General Security Forces of the transition Government and the mainly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), following a brief pause after the ceasefire announced in late December 2025.

Initial fighting near the Alleramoon roundabout – on the historic city’s western outskirts – spread to the predominantly Kurdish neighbourhoods of Ash-Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, with shelling also affecting surrounding government-controlled areas.

Significant damage has been reported to homes and public infrastructure, including healthcare. At least three major hospitals have ceased operations, while flights in and out of Aleppo International Airport have also been suspended since Tuesday.

Protect civilians, de-escalate now

The Secretary-General is alarmed by reports of civilian deaths and injuries after hostilities re-escalated earlier this week in the city’s northeastern neighbourhoods, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters in New York on Wednesday.

The United Nations reiterates that all parties have a clear obligation, under international humanitarian law, to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure,” he said, urging all actors to “immediately de-escalate, exercise maximum restraint, and take all measures to prevent further harm to civilians.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that approximately 30,000 people have been displaced, with more than 2,000 families relocating to Afrin district and around 1,100 people sheltering in nine collective centres inside Aleppo.

Thousands more fled Ashrafiyeh and Ash-Sheikh Maqsoud on Wednesday, seeking refuge with host communities.

Local authorities have designated some places of worship as temporary shelters, opened humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to evacuate, and mobilized public buses to transport displaced families.

Drone footage of the town of Latamneh in Hama, which was completely destroyed during the conflict. Mines and unexploded ordnance continue to litter the area, posing deadly risk for civilians, especially children.

Push to revive March agreement

The Secretary-General called on all parties to demonstrate flexibility and goodwill on both the military and political tracks and to resume negotiations to fully implement the 10 March agreement between the two sides.

Asked what concrete steps were needed, Mr. Dujarric said an agreement between the Government and the SDF on placing security forces under a unified national command would be a key measure, stressing the need for a state in which “all Syrians…would feel safe and protected.”

The latest violence comes amid an uneasy transition following the fall of the Assad Government in December 2024.

Since then, flare-ups of violence in several parts of the country – including renewed sectarian attacks targeting predominantly Alawite coastal areas and Druze communities in Sweida and other governorates – have triggered new displacement and deepened fears among Syrians still recovering from nearly 14 years of war.

Seems like the only thing getting a workout in Aleppo is the shelling – talk about a real estate market crash! 🏚️🏃‍♂️

  3. Isn’t it charming how a city with such a rich history is now just an open-air museum for chaos? Just what every tourist dreams of—shelling and displacement! 🙄

  4. Seems like Aleppo’s got a bit of a “celebration” going on, what with the shelling and all—nothing like a good old-fashioned conflict to spice up the local real estate market, right? 🏚️💥

Just what Aleppo needed, another round of “Let’s Play Hide and Seek” with civilians dodging shells instead of enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee. Brilliant strategy, honestly, who needs stability when you can have chaos? 🤷‍♂️

Seems like Aleppo’s decided to throw a little “welcome back” party for the locals, complete with fireworks of the explosive kind. Who needs hospitals when you’ve got a front-row seat to the latest in urban destruction art? 🎉💥

  7. Another day, another round of “who can shell the most innocent civilians” in Syria. It’s almost as if they’re competing for a humanitarian award or something. 🤷‍♂️

  8. Seems like the Aleppo real estate market is really booming… not! Just a little shelling and a mass exodus—who wouldn’t want to live there? 🎉🏚️

Seems like Aleppo is really embracing that “no pain, no gain” philosophy – who needs stability when you can have chaos? 😏 The locals must be thrilled to get a permanent vacation from their homes, all thanks to the lovely hospitality of their fellow citizens! 🏚️✈️

  10. Incredible how a city can become a tourist hotspot for chaos and destruction; who needs a vacation in the Alps when you can have a front-row seat to the Aleppo experience? 📉🏙️

Typical Tuesday in Aleppo, where the only thing more predictable than the weather is the civilian displacement. It’s almost like a bad soap opera, but with less drama and more chaos. 🤷‍♂️

Can’t believe we’re still discussing this soap opera of a conflict! It’s like watching a never-ending rerun of “Who Wants to Be Displaced?” – just grab your popcorn and hope for a plot twist, or is it just more shelling? 🍿😏

Honestly, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned game of “hide and seek” with humanitarian aid? Just when you thought Aleppo was finally getting a breather, they roll out the red carpet for more chaos. 🤦‍♂️

Just another day in Aleppo, where getting shelled is the new normal and “peace talks” sound more like a bad joke. 🤷‍♂️ Who needs a vacation when you can experience this chaos firsthand?

Nothing like a good old-fashioned civil war to really spice up the week, eh? At this rate, I’d suggest Aleppo start charging admission for the chaos—might as well profit from all the drama. 🎭💸

Seems like Aleppo’s trying to set a new record for “most dramatic city” – who needs reality TV when you have this? 🙄

Remarkable how a ceasefire can turn into a full-blown fireworks show faster than you can say “let’s negotiate” 🤦‍♂️. Don’t you just love it when everyone decides to take a holiday from peace?

Looks like Aleppo is really pulling out all the stops for a dramatic sequel to the long-running series “Conflict: The Never-Ending Story.” Who knew humanitarian crises could be such a popular tourist attraction? 😏

Seems like Aleppo has become the newest hotspot for “let’s play a game of who can displace the most people” – at this rate, they’ll need a tour guide just to navigate the rubble. 😂🏙️

Canaan (Hebrew: כְּנַעַן Kəna‘an – “submissive, subject”) was the son of Ham and grandson of Noah (Gen. 9:18). Following Ham’s disrespect towards Noah, a curse was placed not on Ham but on his son Canaan: “cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers” (Gen. 9:25). Canaan became the forefather of the peoples referred to in the Bible as the Canaanites.

YHWH

Yahweh is the personal name of God in the Old Testament, reflecting the biblical pronunciation of the Hebrew name יהוה – YHWH, known as the Tetragrammaton, comprising four consonants: yod, he, vav, he.
In the biblical text, this name is notably linked to God’s revelation to Moses at the burning bush. When Moses inquires about God’s name, God responds: “I am who I am” or “I am who I am” (Ex. 3:14)
